AUSTIN OWENS

“Find what you love and you’ll never work another day in your life.”

It’s a phrase that gets thrown around a lot — and it was certainly something that I heard more than enough growing up. But I never really had the chance to appreciate just what those words meant until I began to work in sports, something that I had been dreaming of doing for my entire life.

My name is Austin Owens. I was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, which is roughly 30 minutes East of Toronto.

Growing up, I was glued to the television, but instead of watching cartoons or regular kid’s shows, I was watching the morning highlights on SportsCentre.

I always knew that I wanted to be involved in sports. I had dreams of being a professional athlete, but those dreams quickly faded as I realized that I wasn’t the most gifted when it came to the “athletics” parts of sports. I played a little bit of everything growing up, but I stuck with baseball and lacrosse for the most part. My first lacrosse coach nicknamed me speedy — an ironic nickname.

Once I was wrapping up high school, I became a double graduate of Centennial College, with a degree in Journalism along with a postgraduate degree in Sports Journalism.

During my short time working in and around sports, I’ve had the opportunity to cover and work on some truly incredible events, such as the 2017 North American Indigenous Games, 2017 Invictus Games, the 2019 NBA Finals and the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary, Alberta.

My journey in sports media has taken me to Sportsnet 590 The FAN, theScore, Lacrosse Flash, the Canadian Football League, and most recently, Lucky Penny Media.

I am currently working as a part of the Digital Content team for the National Lacrosse League’s Halifax Thunderbirds while also serving as the Media Director for the Toronto Beaches Jr. A Lacrosse Club.

I have also spent the last two summers with the Premier Lacrosse League as a writer.

Over the last two years, I’ve been able to grow my abilities in both design and social media.

You’ll find my latest writing work along with my latest graphics and photos featured on this site. Thank you so much for dropping by!
